5 Things You Need to Know About JUSTHEPANGSTER

Just a few fun facts about my background, for those who want to know me better.

Here are a few things that you need to know about me – justhepangster

1. The name - #justhepangster

Full credits to my sister, Whitney, for her creativity in coming up with the name 'Pangster', which is taken from our last name 'Pang'. I sort of took the name for myself and combined it with my first name, and voila ‘justhepangster’ was created. It was initially just my Instagram handle, but somehow it caught on amongst my friends, and now it has become my personal brand. I have always found it funny how nicknames are usually chosen by other people, but for me, I got to choose my own nickname.

2. JC Follower

My loving community after my baptism last year

I was raised in a Christian family for all my life, and grew up going to church, doing all the right ‘Christian’ things. However, it was not until I moved to Ottawa for university till I had a transformation in my faith, that now I can truly claim being a true follower. I can now proudly proclaim in full faith of my beliefs in Christ, and what a wild ride has this been coming to know Jesus.

3. Third Culture Kid

A lot of people I’ve met have not heard of the term ‘third culture kid’ before. To explain the term in simple terms, it refers to “the mixed identity that a child assumes, influenced both by their parents' culture and the culture in which they are raised.” This was my experience growing up with Canadianized parents, surrounded and living in Hong Kong culture. Let’s just say I am still figuring what is my cultural identity.

I elaborate more on my experience of being a third culture kid and how that shaped my identify in my next blog post.

4. Artist in me - photography and typography

My sister was always been known to be the artist in the family, but as I got older I realized I also had an artistic side in me that was different from her. Coming to university, I developed a deeper passion in my art, specifically photography and typography. I find so much joy in capturing the raw moments in life, through the lens of a camera; how a picture could narrate so much of a story. On the other hand, typography for me, gives me the freedom to express art through the flow and layout of letters. This passion I believe was cultivated back when I had to learn Chinese calligraphy for school, but I guess have left some lasting impact in me. My next step in my artist journey, I hope is to combine two of these art forms together.

5. uOttawa #geegee #telfie

I am currently in my final semester of my undergraduate studies at University of Ottawa, studying Commerce with specialization in Management Information Systems Analytics (MISA) I know it’s a mouth full. But I am proud to be a #GEEGEE. Extra fun fact: my Chinese name is actually ‘Pang Pak Gee’ so when I was younger, everyone called me ‘Gee Gee’, so I guess you can say I was meant to come to uOttawa, since the mascot is a gee gee (first horse out of the gate).
